Studies on the flower Color Variation in Hibiscus syriacus L.

Abstract
Flower colors of 47 cyanic cultivars of Hibiscus syriacus was studied by the visual, colorimetric and spectrophotometric techniques. Absorption spectra of fresh petals were negatively related with both transmission and reflection spectra in all cultivars examined. The distribution map of ¥ë_(vis) max, and the absorption curve pattern of fresh petals made possible to classify cultivars into four groups A, B, C and D. The ¥ë_(vis) max. range was 531¡538 §¬ in group A, 532¡544 §¬ in B, 555¡588 §¬ in C, and 583¡592 §¬ with shoulder around 640§¬ in group D. This classification was in good agreement with visual colors evaluated with Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart. Color classification of each group was pink (A), violet red (B), purple (C) and violet blue (D) in Royal Horticultural Society Color Chart respectively. Hunters diagram of flower colors was also compared with the spectrophotometric classification; although Hunters diagram was less effective than the spectrophotometric method for color classification in this plant, the former was useful to understand overall flower color distribution in H. syriacus.
